Licensing

Most providers listed here are directly licensed by the National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) to provide money remittance services — including Dahabshiil, TapTap Send, TalkRemit, Remitly, WorldRemit, Ria and Western Union, all of which appear on the NBE's official licensed-institutions list. We check each provider against that list before listing it.

Using unlicensed transfer services is illegal under Ethiopian law. One exception on this page is Wise, which is not on the NBE licensed-remittance list; it settles Ethiopian birr through the banking system (a USD wire to a local bank) rather than as an NBE-licensed remittance operator. The NBE publishes its official list of licensed institutions, which we reconcile against the providers shown here.
